Steven E. Taylor, professor and head of the AU Department of Biosystems Engineering, is serving as director of the Bioenergy and Bioproducts Center, bringing to the position a strong background in administrative leadership and natural resource-related engineering. Taylor, a registered professional engineer who has been on the AU biosystems engineering faculty since 1989 and has been department head since 2003, earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in agricultural engineering from the University of Florida in 1983 and 1985, respectively. He received his doctorate in agricultural engineering from Texas A&M University in 1988. Taylor also serves as adjunct professor in the AU School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences and is a leader in numerous agriculture, engineering, and forestry outreach activities. He was named the Department of Biosystems Engineering’s outstanding faculty member in 1991, 1992, 1996, 2000, and 2001. Prior to becoming department head and taking on duties of the Center’s directorship, Taylor’s teaching and research interests focused on forest engineering and structural wood engineering—from finding ways to reduce the environmental impacts of forest roads and stream crossings and developing GPS-based “precision forestry” tools for maintaining sustainable forests to testing products made with wood components and developing innovative timber bridge designs and portable timber bridge systems. |
